Supporting Someone With An Addiction

Supporting a loved one when they’re struggling with addiction is never easy. It requires patience, compassion, bravery, and the ability to stand your ground. Unfortunately, this can also take a toll on your mental health and disrupt your life. At Cremation Care Centre, we believe that support and compassion can go a long way to help people recover. Here’s a look at some ways you can support someone when they’re struggling with addiction:

1. Open Honest Communication

It is essential to be honest and communicate directly with the addict. This might seem frustrating and ineffective, but it helps you establish a strong rapport with them, and that can make things better in the long-run.

2. Create an Environment of Compassion and Trust

Work on earning their trust and create an environment of compassion. Addicts can be insecure and distrustful. They will care about your opinion and won’t respond well if they feel you’re judging them. If you’re compassionate, they’re more likely to trust you and tell you about issues like relapses.

3. Don’t Shame Them

People struggling with addiction already struggle with a lot of shame and doubt. Adding to it won’t help them recover and will damage your relationship with them. Frequent relapses and associated behaviors can be frustrating, but it is essential to show that you don't blame them.

4. Respect Their Privacy

It isn't easy to respect a person's privacy when you're helping them recover from addiction. You want to check their room for illicit substances and drugs. You want to keep an eye on their movements and interactions with others. This can be invasive and break their trust. Respect the patient's privacy as much as you can while being vigilant.
