Grief Amid The Pandemic: How To Show Love And Support Through Social Distancing

Social distancing is a vital measure to control the spread of COVID-19 and ensure the most vulnerable populations are safe. While isolation is necessary, it is also stressful and can hurt a person's mental health. It is even more stressful for people suffering from grief and loss. At The Cremation Care Centre, we encourage people to follow the tips mentioned below to support their friends:

1. Check-In on Them

Isolation affects everyone so it is easy to get lost in your concerns and forget about a grieving loved one. Make it a point to check in on them with a message or a call. You can even schedule a call at a specific time every day and make it a routine. Scheduling a task gives people purpose, which can have a positive impact on your mindset and help your loved one as well.

2. Engage in Conversations

Don’t just call to say hello, engage your loved one in a long conversation. You can discuss everything from day-to-day activities or talk about some funny things you saw on social media. Even delving into serious topics like how governments are handling the pandemic or how the environment is responding to the lack of human activity can help. Meaningful conversations can distract them from their grief and help them feel less isolated.

3. Call Neighbors if Necessary

Sometimes grieving individuals refuse to communicate, which can cause a lot of worries. Don't hesitate to call a neighbor or another friend to check the status of a loved one. Most neighbors will be willing to look out of the window or knock on doors to check on your behalf.
